Individual Time Trials/FKT Attempts
Want to set a record on the Jersey Devil Hunt?
The speed record in each category is known as a Fastest Known Time, or “FKT.” A ride in which you time yourself is known as an Individual Time Trial, or “ITT.”
Preparation
To take part in an officially-recognized time trial, you’ll need:
- Be familiar with the ITT/FKT rules (see below)
- A GPS tracking device to record your path as you ride
- An email sent to info@jerseydevilhunt.com with:
- Your name
- Date & time you expect to begin the time trial (this is not binding)
- Gender category in which you will compete (men, women, non-binary)
- Is an individual or team FKT?
- if team, who else is on the team? (each team member must send this information)
- Any other interesting category factors (e.g. tandem, singlespeed, etc.)
- Link to your Trackleaders account, if applicable
- (Optional but strongly encouraged) A Trackleaders account to record your progress
- It also allows your family, friends and fans to follow your journey!
- This requires a device that can ping your location – usually a Spot Tracker or Garmin InReach, but a smartphone (e.g. iPhone with the Ping app) can be used as well.
- Contact Trackleaders with your account information and let them know you are doing a Jersey Devil Hunt ITT. They will coordinate with you from there.
- Small donations (beer money) to Trackleaders from riders are always appreciated as thanks for their free service.
Time Trial Rules
Anyone wishing to have their time recognized as a potential FKT must follow the rules below. These are basically the same as the rules for Tour Divide time trials, because I don’t see any reason to invent my own. In summary:
- ITTs may begin at the time of your choice.
- Final results must be verified by your unedited GPS track, submitted to info@jerseydevilhunt.com.
- You MUST specify when the time-trial began, to the nearest minute!
- This is best done by turning on your GPS unit/starting to record when you are at the starting location (Waterfront Park).
- Report when (as precisely as you can) you touched the Monument to Workers to count as a finishing time.
- As of spring 2026, the Monument to Workers has been removed during construction. Until it’s back, the endpoint for your ITT is the fence blocking off JFK plaza, opposite the bust of JFK.
- You MUST specify when the time-trial began, to the nearest minute!
- Riders must follow the most recent Time Trial Version of the JDH route.
- The route begins at the corner of Lalor St. and Lamberton St. in Trenton, at the circle just inside the Waterfront Park entrance
- The route ends at the monument to workers at JFK Plaza, Atlantic City
- Note that this route is slightly shorter than the main Jersey Devil Hunt route (with some distance on each end being removed) but otherwise identical
- You must pedal (or walk or carry) your bike the entire way, on your own body’s power.
- If you leave the route (e.g. to reach a bike shop for repairs) you may hitch a ride in a vehicle while off route, but you must return to the point where you left the route and continue on your own power.
- Riders must cover the complete Jersey Devil Hunt Time Trial route (see link above).
- Whenever you depart from the route during the ITT, you must return to it at the same point you left or as close as possible—within 100ft of where you departed it, as measured from your final unedited GPS track.
- If an obstacle makes it impossible to complete the course at a certain point, return as close as possible (within 100 feet) to the point where you left it.
- If it is impossible to return within 100 feet of the departure point due to a more extensive obstacle, return to the route as soon as possible and report this issue along with your final GPX track.
- The official route does not use the boardwalks in Ocean City and Ventnor/Atlantic City, because these are not open to bicycles at certain times. You may choose to ride the boardwalks as part of your time trial if you reach them at times when bikes are allowed.
- For a team ITT, the finishing time will be when ALL team members have reached the finish point (touched the Monument to Workers at JFK Plaza). Each team member’s finishing time will be identical.
- Otherwise, riders are not required to stay together for the entirety of the ride.
- You (or your team) must be self-sufficient; no outside support is allowed. This means you source all your own food and supplies, and do your own repairs or make your way to a shop.
- The visitation rules aren’t as strict as the Tour Divide. It’s okay to have people photograph you, etc.
- You may not arrange to have anyone bring you food, supplies, or services from off-route. Acceptance of such aid counts as scratching from your ITT attempt.
- If people you encounter spontaneously (without prior coordination with you) offer mechanical help, food, trail magic etc., you may accept as long as it complies with all other rules.
